How Much Does Daycare Cost in Edmonton? (2026 Guide)
If you’re a parent in Edmonton — or anywhere in Alberta — the cost of childcare has changed dramatically over the past few years, and it’s confusing to keep up. This guide breaks down what licensed daycare actually costs today, how the CWELCC program works, and what you can expect to pay.
The short answer
Because of the federal-provincial Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) agreement, licensed daycare in Alberta is far more affordable than it was a few years ago. The program’s national goal is an average of $10 a day per child, and Alberta families now pay a fraction of the old market rate. At KITA Academy, current parent fees are $326.25/month full-time ($230/month part-time) after the CWELCC grant.
What is CWELCC?
CWELCC is a joint federal–provincial program that funds licensed childcare providers so they can charge parents much lower fees. In Alberta, this comes through affordability grants paid to participating licensed daycares, which reduce what families pay directly.
Important: CWELCC only applies to licensed childcare for children who are not yet in kindergarten. Unlicensed care and school-age care are not covered the same way.
What parents actually pay
Your out-of-pocket cost depends on:
- Your child’s age group (infant, toddler, or preschool) — infant care is typically the most in demand.
- Full-time vs. part-time enrolment.
- Whether you qualify for additional subsidy (see below).

Can I get extra help paying?
Yes. On top of CWELCC’s lower base fees, lower- and middle-income families may qualify for an additional Alberta childcare subsidy, which reduces costs even further. Eligibility is based on household income and the type of care. Read our full guide to the Alberta childcare subsidy →
