Alberta Childcare Subsidy & CWELCC, Explained
Alberta parents can save a lot on licensed daycare — but between “CWELCC,” “affordability grants,” and “subsidy,” it’s easy to get lost. Here’s a plain-language guide to how it all fits together and how to make sure you’re getting every dollar you’re entitled to.
Two different kinds of help
There are two layers of support, and most families benefit from both:
- 1. CWELCC affordability grants (everyone at a licensed provider). These are paid directly to your licensed daycare and lower the base fee for all families with a child not yet in kindergarten — no income test.
- 2. The Alberta childcare subsidy (income-based). An additional reduction for lower- and middle-income families, based on your household income and care type.
Who qualifies for the income-based subsidy?
Eligibility depends on your household income, whether the care is licensed, and your child’s age. As a general rule, the lower your income, the larger the subsidy. Exact income thresholds change year to year — check current amounts at the Government of Alberta (alberta.ca/child-care-subsidy).
How to apply
- Choose a licensed daycare (like KITA Academy) — subsidy only applies to licensed care.
- Apply through the Government of Alberta childcare subsidy application (online). apply at alberta.ca/child-care-subsidy
- Provide income documentation as requested.
- Your subsidy is applied to your monthly fee once approved.
Your daycare can often help walk you through the process — just ask.
How much could you save?
Between CWELCC and the income-based subsidy, many Alberta families now pay a small fraction of what unsubsidized childcare used to cost. See our full breakdown of daycare costs in Edmonton →
A few things to watch
- Subsidy applies to licensed care only.
- It generally covers children not yet in kindergarten; school-age care rules differ.
- Keep your income and enrolment info up to date so your subsidy stays accurate.
