What Age Can My Child Start Daycare in Alberta?

Whether you’re heading back to work after parental leave or planning ahead, one of the first questions parents ask is: how young is too young for daycare? Here’s how age groups work at licensed Alberta daycares, and how to plan so a spot is ready when you need it.

The short answer

Licensed daycares in Alberta typically care for children from infancy through to kindergarten age. At KITA Academy, we accept children from infancy up to kindergarten age. Infant spaces are the most limited and in-demand, so planning early matters.

Age groups explained

  • Infants — under 12 months. The most sought-after (and lowest-ratio) rooms; waitlists here move slowly.
  • Toddlers — 12 months to 3 years (younger & older toddler groups). Lots of movement, exploration, and early social skills.
  • Preschool & pre-kindergarten — 3 years to kindergarten age. School-readiness, early literacy and numeracy, and independence.

These groups also line up with how the CWELCC program funds care — which covers children up until they start kindergarten. See how CWELCC affects what you pay →

Signs your child is ready

Every child is different, but common signs of readiness include:

  • A reasonably predictable feeding and sleep routine.
  • Comfort being cared for by trusted adults other than parents.
  • Curiosity about other children and new environments.

Even very young infants adjust well to a warm, consistent daycare — the key is a smooth transition and good communication between you and your child’s educators.

Plan early — spots fill fast

Because infant and toddler spaces are limited, the best move is to join a waitlist well before your intended start date — many parents sign up during pregnancy or early parental leave. There’s no cost to plan ahead, and it means a spot is ready when you are.
